Parent Info
Smyser families, welcome to the new 2010-2011 school year! We look forward to a very worthwhile and challenging school year. Everything listed on this page is meant to assist you and address common concerns. Thank you for your continued cooperation and assistance. Academic Procedures and Information The following are suggested time allocations for teacher-directed homework assignments: Kindergarten 15 minutes per day Grades1, 2 and 3 30 minutes per day Grades 4, 5 and 6 45 minutes per day Grades 7 and 8 90 minutes per day Parents are to provide space and a quiet time for their child to complete the homework each night. They should monitor that the homework is being done and review the corrected homework returned by the teacher. Parents should assist their children in the utilization of community resources such as libraries, which can be helpful to the student when completing homework. Finally, parents should contact the teacher if there are any problems with homework. Smyser parents are requested to read the student assignment book daily, sign the book and the completed homework assignments. If a child is absent, he/she is expected to find out what work was missed and make up the missed assignments. Smyser Grading Scale Student participation, class work, homework completion, tests, authentic assessments and a numerical scale determine report card grades. The numerical grade scale is as follows: A= 92-100 B= 83-91 C= 72-82 D= 63-71 F= 62 or below Honor Roll The Smyser School Honor Roll program is designed to recognize students in grades 2-8 who have achieved certain degrees of excellence in schoolwork. The names of honor roll students are included in the school newsletter and also posted on the Smyser website. Students on the honor roll must have achieved an “A” or “B” in all academic subjects, an “A”, “B”, or “C” in handwriting, art, music and physical education, and no checks. A grade of “D” or “F” in any subject disqualifies the student from the honor roll.
Physical Examination and Immunization Requirements Parents are reminded that physical examination and immunization requirements for Chicago public school students are as follows: Students entering kindergarten, sixth, and ninth grade are required to submit proof of physical examination and current immunization s to their local school by October 15th of each year. If you have already submitted a completed Certificate of Child Health Examination Form please accept our appreciation. If you have not met this requirement please submit a completed Certificate of Child Health Examination Form immediately to avoid exclusion. In addition, kindergarteners, and any student enrolling for the first time in any grade, are now required to have a full version examination or their report card may be withheld. Students entering kindergarten, second, and sixth grade must have their dental examination completed by May 15th of each school year or their report card may be withheld. If your child has not received the required examination and your family does not have health care insurance, places contact the Chicago Public School Children and Family Benefit Unit (CFBU). You may be eligible for Allkids or Family Care. Contact CFBU at 773-553-1809. School Fees Children in grades K-8 are required to pay a $100 work book fee. The money is used to purchase consumable instructional materials in language arts, math, social studies, science and other instructional areas. Work books are the sole possession of the child. Payment can be given directly to your child’s teacher or office using cash, cashier’s check or money order (made out to Smyser School). Sorry CPS Policy prohibits the acceptance of personal checks. Kindly, place payment in a sealed enveloped labeled Materials Fee along with your child’s name and room number. Our funding is limited and this fee is necessary for us to continue providing our children with high quality educational services and materials. This year we hope to have 100% of our faculty and families join the Smyser Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). This hard working group composed of parents, teachers, and the principal is all about working together to provide the BEST educational environment for our children and to promote open communication between parents, teachers, and administration. Join our team and help us make a difference! Meetings are held once a month following the LSC meeting. You do not have to attend but everyone is always welcome. PTO membership dues are $3.00 minimum per family (other monetary donations are always welcome). A family membership gets you a free school magnet.
