Welcome! My name is Ava Foreman and I have been teaching at Smyser for many years. I am one of the 8th grade teachers and am the departmental social studies teacher. I am very excited about working with this year's class of 8th graders. I try and place all the homework assignments on the Smyser web site every night. Please, feel free to contact me by e-mail or phone 773-534-3711 ext. 81462. I do expect the students to be in uniform every day, and come to class ready with their assignments and materials. Homework will not be accepted late (students who are absent from school are exempt from this). If for some reason an emergency or some unusual event occurs, a parent can write me a note asking me to excuse the student and allowing him/her one more day to complete the homework assignment. In social studies homework makes up 10% of the grade, classroom assignments or work is 50%, and tests/projects makes up 40% of the grade. The reading grade is broken down with the following percentages: assignments/classroom activities (including 20/20 reading) 60%, and tests/projects worth 40%. Language Arts is the following: 30% for assignments which includes drafts for writing assignments and grammar activities, tests and final writing assignments are 20%, and the CPS writing prompts 50%. It is easy to keep up with a student's grades by accessing the Smyser web site by using the given portal number (portal assignments are available through the office) I highly recommend parents and students keep track of grades by using this site.
